8/1/07 ~ Cats In The Yard
These quick sketches were done in
pencil from life; (steps one and two
in my previous online demonstration). The watercolor wash was
added
later in the studio. I add notes to my sketches so I can remember
more
details. It also makes it more fun to look at later.

8/2/07 ~ Teen Art
This sketch was done today by seventeen
year old Dillon Yates. My
nephews, Dillon and Cody, have been visiting from Florida this
past
week with my sister Gaile. The boys started asking about art
lessons
the minute they walked in the door and we enjoyed several sessions
during
their stay. I know they really liked it, because it was the last
thing they asked
for this morning before they left! :-) I'll post Cody's sketch
tomorrow.
|
 |
8/3/07 ~ Cody's Sketch
I've accumulated quite an elephant
collection. It gave my nephews
plenty of options when they felt like sketching. Fifteen year
old Cody,
drew at least four specimens while he was here. I was impressed
by
his improvement, optomistic determination and desire to learn.

 |
8/4/07 ~ Native Art
I find it harder to draw the stylized
elephant figurines that are hand carved.
It seems that the ones that are less anatomically correct are
more of a
challenge to sketch. I'm not sure why this is. Any ideas?

 |
8/5/07 ~ More Animals
This Bighorn Ram sketch was done from
a DVD. I just
put it on "pause" and quickly draw away! There's a
world
of reference at our fingertips these days!
|
 |
8/6/07 ~ Owl Sketch
I used this drawing as one of my references
in the painting,
"Who's In These Woods?", posted today on my Spirit
Art Blog.
|
 |
8/7/07 ~ Florida Alligator
It is serendipitous that I have been
commissioned to do an American Alligator
Spirit Art painting and also have just acquired an art agent
in Florida! I am currently
sketching and designing paintings highlighting animals that are
native to that region.
|
 |
8/8/07 ~ Sandhill Cranes
These birds are found year round in
most of Florida.
They mate for life, so it is sad to see a lone mature bird,
because something probably happened to their partner.
|
 |
8/9/07 ~ Big Chick
Most female cranes only produce two
eggs each year. Often only
one chick survives. Because of this slow reproduction rate and
loss of
critical habitat, cranes are among the most endangered species
of birds.
|
 |
8/10/07 ~ Crane Sketches
Drawing directly on a xeroxed copy,
then altering it in Photoshop,
here I am working out designs for my paintings. I often use copies,
scissors and computer to come up with my final composition.
|
 |
8/11/07 ~ Nesting Crane
I'm having a friend for dinner tonight
and didn't realize it was so late.
Yikes! Whipped this one up in less than ten minutes.
|
 |
8/12/07 ~ Steps One And Two
I'm all set up and getting ready for my Drawing Everyday Workshop.
Here today are three unfinished sketches; steps one and two of
my drawing system.
I am psyched. We are going to have "Tons Of Fun"!
|
 |
8/13/07 ~ Workshop Participants
I was impressed by the skill level
of the artists that participated
in my Drawing Everyday Workshop today. We all had a real
good time. I think everyone loosened up a bit and learned a
few new things to add to their repertoire.
|
 |
8/14/07 ~ Drawings With Wash
I wanted to show you these drawings,
now completed.
Compare with Sunday's post and I think you'll agree,
that the watercolor wash really brings them to life.
|
 |
8/15/07 ~ Planning Paintings
I've been working on alligator concepts
today and have plans
to turn this sketch into a painting.
|
 |
8/16/07 ~ Natural Beauty
The ecosystem of the Everglades is
a vast network of marshes, swamps and
rivers that offer a wide variety of habitat for many unique plants
and animals.
How this summer has flown by! Only two weeks left of my
drawing everyday emails. I hope you've enjoyed seeing
them as much as I've enjoyed doing them!
|
 |
8/17/07 ~ Concept Drawing
Today's drawing is a concept I had
where I'm trying to depict the shadow
or reflection of the bird coming across the water and the body
of the alligator.
|
 |
8/18/07 ~ Colorado Elk Sketch
I spent the day finishing up alligator
paintings and now have five pieces ready
to frame and send down to my agent in Florida. Now it's time
to switch to the
spirit of the West, where I hope to hang my hat soon and capture
some hearts.
|
 |
8/19/07 ~ Drawing Strengthens Paintings
I've found that much frustration can
be eliminated and greater overall
success can be attained by working out my composition and values
ahead of time with an easy drawing everyday sketch.
|
 |
8/20/07 ~ The Harem
During rut, elk herds are often comprised
of many females and
their young. They are under the direct rule of one or more dominant
bulls. Gigantic battles among competing males are common, and
elk country often vibrates with antlers clacking and shrill bugling.
|
 |
8/21/07 ~ Camouflaged
Twice a year the Snowshoe Hare changes
it's camouflaged ensemble.
Blending so well into the environment, this hare often reveals
its
whereabouts only by its tracks.
|
 |
8/22/07 ~ The Blues
The Great Blue Heron is the best known
and most widespread heron
in North America and is found in fresh as well as salt water.
Their
diet consists of a wide variety of prey including fish, frogs,
salamanders, snakes, eels, crabs, rodents and insects.
|
 |
8/23/07 ~ Crested Butte, CO
The great mountains of the West are
the inspiration of artists and
the environment that skiers and snowboarders dream of.
|
 |
8/24/07 ~ Star Lit Slopes
My friend and excellent photographer,
Sally Vennel has emailed me some
breathtaking views of the slopes around Crested Butte, CO. This
one was
inspired by a daytime shot she calls Alley Loop.
|
 |
8/25/07 ~ Same Concept / Different
Animals
I've been thinking of some more "Mother
Love" ideas, like my 8/15 post.
These bears will definitely become a new painting! Done in a
regular sketch book,
these are never a finished piece as is. Through study, options
are explored. Ideas
solidify as my communication skills and understanding of the
subject improve.
|
 |
8/26/07 ~ Slate River Valley
Today's sketch was done from another
photo by Sally Vennel. I get
chills just looking at the snow blowing off the peaks that feed
this icy river.
|
 |
8/27/07 ~ Workshop
Participants did at least three great
drawings today. We also worked on UO People!
We lost track of time and the class ran late, so I didn't get
a chance to scan any work.
Here's an antique carved bear from Yellowstone Park that I drew
for our demo.
|
 |
8/28/07 ~ Change Of Pace
For a change of pace, today's quick
sketch of an old junker in the snow has
a hint of a nostalgic flavor.
|
 |
8/29/07 ~ Hummingbird And Columbine
Today I was planning paintings and
came up with this sketch of
a hummingbird and Columbine. These attractive wildflowers grow
well in
mountain meadows. The graceful blue Columbine is the Colorado
state flower.
|
 |
8/30/07 ~ Hummingbirds And Columbine
I got a little carried away with this
idea sketch, but I was having so much fun!
Crossing a fine line between a sketch and a painting, this was
created in my
sketchbook, so it's more a study than a painting. Besides, tomorrow's
the end
of the Drawing Everyday Blog for this summer and I'd like to
go out in style!
|
 |
8/31/07 ~ Final Sketch
The summer has come to an end and
so has this year's Drawing Everyday Blog.
Thanks to all of you who have written in and offered your opinions,
ideas
and friendship. See you back here on June 1st, 2008!
